Alarming Rise: Over 800 Mpox Deaths Confirmed in Africa Amidst Ongoing Epidemic

2024-10-03

In a distressing update from the African Union's disease control center, it has been reported that more than 800 individuals have succumbed to mpox across Africa. This alarming statistic was shared during a press briefing on Thursday, where officials warned that the mpox epidemic is "not under control."

Since the beginning of the year, Africa has recorded a staggering 34,297 cases of mpox, including 38 confirmed cases in Ghana. As of now, mpox has been officially detected in 16 African countries, revealing the widespread nature of this health crisis.

Jean Kaseya, head of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), expressed grave concern over the situation, stating that the death toll has reached 866. He noted that the testing rates remain critically low, with approximately 2,500 new cases identified within the last week alone.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), identified as the epicenter of the outbreak, is set to commence vaccination efforts in just two days. Vaccination initiatives were initially scheduled to begin on October 2. The timely rollout of vaccines is crucial in managing the outbreak and controlling transmission rates.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral disease transmitted to humans primarily through infected animals, but it can also spread between humans via close physical contact. The disease presents symptoms such as fever, muscular aches, and painful, boil-like skin lesions, which can lead to severe health complications and even death.

Experts are urging countries to ramp up testing and vaccination efforts to curb the epidemic's spread. With the ongoing health threat, communities are encouraged to remain vigilant and informed about prevention strategies.

As Africa grapples with this public health challenge, the world watches closely, hoping for a swift response to mitigate the impact of mpox on the continent.
