An American's Struggle: Job Loss Amidst Global Turmoil

Last week, I received an email that changed everything:

"We will complete our current project, but thereafter, we are severing all business ties with Americans and American companies. It’s not your fault, but your president has initiated a war. We still value the American people, but best of luck."

In a flash, I lost 20% of my income—my first experience with being boycotted and canceled.

As a voice-over actor, my job is to lend my voice to various projects, from commercial ads to instructional videos. I pride myself on delivering a trustworthy and engaging sound that enhances countless brands and messages. However, the perception of an “American sound” has now been irreparably damaged.

My client, an international organization that collaborates across all continents, has decided to eliminate any association with American voices or individuals in light of recent geopolitical tensions. Surprisingly, this decision came from a Canadian company—one of our closest allies—reacting to turmoil stemming from U.S. leadership choices.

The implications of this decision are stark and alarming. If our neighbors to the north, known for their inherent warmth and politeness, are taking such measures, what can we anticipate from countries with long-held grievances against the United States?

When the message came through, I felt a surge of indignation. I wanted to assert my individuality in this situation—perhaps by showcasing my progressive track record, highlighting my advocacy for LGBTQ rights, or emphasizing my support for community initiatives. But the broader narrative of collective guilt persisted. No matter how I identify personally, in the eyes of the world, Americans seem to share in the blame.

Rejection is an unavoidable part of a freelancer's career. We're accustomed to pivots and changes, especially when new leadership takes charge. Yet, this email felt particularly painful. Finding dependable clients is a rare treasure in this competitive field, and losing one due to geopolitical fallout is devastating.

My income source vanished, compounded by growing concerns that artificial intelligence will eventually replace my profession. The emergence of AI is already threatening traditional roles across many industries, and now geopolitical factors further complicate the landscape in which freelancers operate.

Despite the bitterness of losing a contract, I felt a sense of grudging respect for the Canadian company’s decision. They chose to stand up in solidarity with their principles—a stance that reflects a broader sentiment and growing global tensions. It was a reminder that as much as I may disagree with political decisions, business actions have real-world consequences.

At least my former client was upfront about the reasons for the termination of our relationship. They didn’t cite quality or budget issues, nor did they choose to simply disappear without explanation. Instead, they communicated that the actions of U.S. leadership carry weight, and there are repercussions for our country’s current path.

Many Americans will likely find themselves in similar predicaments as nations around the world reassess their ties with the U.S. and adopt measures against what they see as misguided actions.

The questions loom large: After the bridges are burned and former allies turn their backs, what does the future hold for Americans? Will democracy endure in an environment where many appear to cheer its unraveling?

As I contemplate these hard truths, I remain committed to fighting for what I believe in through my voice and writing. Perhaps I’ll craft a new sound palette to adapt to the changing landscape, or maybe rebrand myself altogether.

Amidst the challenges, I choose to persist and remain engaged, striving to navigate this tumultuous landscape while advocating for the values I hold dear.

Conclusion

As the global narrative shifts and new alliances form, will Americans be able to turn the tide, or are we destined for isolation? Only time will tell.
