According to insider reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this upcoming device is being referred to as a 'testing ground for future technologies,' hinting at exciting innovations, including a potential leap into foldable devices.

Design Innovations: Slimmer Than Ever

The name 'iPhone 17 Air' aligns perfectly with Apple's legacy of releasing the thinnest devices within their product lines, just as seen with the MacBook Air and iPad Air. Expected to be around 2 millimeters thinner than the current iPhones, this device is rumored to have a thickness ranging between 5.5mm and 6.25mm. For context, that would place it on par with the M4 iPad Pro and make it slimmer than even the iPhone 6, reflecting Apple's commitment to pushing design boundaries.

A Step Towards Foldable Devices?

But the astonishing thinness is more than just an aesthetic choice; Gurman suggests it could pave the way for future foldable iPhones and iPads. Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air might serve as a platform for testing Apple's in-house cell modem, codenamed Sinope, set to launch with the iPhone SE this spring. This year's lineup is also rumored to introduce Apple-designed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, elevating connectivity standards, although it remains uncertain if the 17 Air will utilize this tech.

On the display front, expect a striking 6.6-inch ProMotion OLED screen with a 120Hz variable refresh rate—technology that has thus far been exclusive to iPhone Pro models.
