Stay Safe: Immunization Awareness Takes Center Stage!
Alberta Health Services (AHS) is launching a crucial reminder for all Albertans: it's time to roll up your sleeves during National Immunization Awareness Week, running from April 21 to April 30!
As alarming reports of measles cases emerge in the province, the health authority has emphasized that staying updated with your vaccinations is your best defense. AHS warns that the only way to effectively combat the spread of these highly contagious diseases is through proper immunization.
What You Need to Know About the MMR-Var Vaccine!
The MMR-Var vaccine, which is included in Alberta's routine immunization schedule for children, is available at no cost to residents. Protecting against measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox (varicella), this vital vaccine can safeguard your family and community.
As of April 17, Alberta has reported 89 confirmed measles cases, with nearly half—49—located in the central zone. The spread is often exacerbated during peak travel times, making awareness even more critical.
Planning to Travel? Be Prepared!
For those traveling or returning from areas where measles is prevalent, AHS urges everyone, especially the unimmunized, to stay vigilant. The government advises travelers to remain informed about regions impacted by outbreaks.
How to Get Immunized!
Have questions about your immunizations? Don't hesitate to consult your healthcare provider or reach out to Health Link at 811 for assistance. AHS also offers a handy "Find a Doctor" tool through Alberta's primary care networks, making it easy to locate a provider accepting new patients nearby.
You can schedule your immunization appointment in a few simple ways: – Call Health Link at 811 for booking information. – Use the Find Healthcare search tool to locate an AHS public health centre close to you by selecting "hospitals and facilities," then searching for "public health centre." – Determine your nearest Community Health Centre using the community health centre search tool.
