Big News for Calgary Residents: Enmax Bills Set to Decrease in 2025!
Good news is on the horizon for Calgary residents as the City has announced that Enmax bills may be lower starting in 2025. The recent media release confirms that the Alberta Utilities Commission has approved a new franchise agreement between the city and Enmax, aimed at creating more affordable and predictable electricity rates for Calgarians.
Beginning January 1, 2025, the electricity franchise fee—also known as the Local Access Fee—will shift to a fixed rate of $0.015507 per kilowatt hour. This is a significant departure from the previous structure where the Local Access Fee fluctuated based on electricity prices.
City officials project that the new fee structure could lead to a staggering 30% reduction in the average customer's franchise fee, lowering the monthly charge from $11.24 to $7.91. This change is set to alleviate some of the financial burden on households, especially as energy costs have been on the rise in recent years.
In a statement regarding the impact of this change, the city clarified, "Alberta's electricity market gives customers the freedom to choose their power retailer, which is then distributed by Enmax within Calgary. This means that all customers in Calgary, regardless of their chosen energy retailer, will benefit from the new franchise fee rate."
It’s important to emphasize that this new rate only pertains to electricity and will not affect the existing natural gas franchise fee.
This development comes at a critical time when many consumers are looking for ways to save on utility costs, making it a welcomed change for many Calgary families. Stay tuned as we monitor the implementation of this new fee structure and its real impact on monthly bills!
