In a shocking turn of events, several beloved historic businesses along Vancouver's Hastings Street were engulfed in flames early Wednesday morning.
The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services received urgent calls around 4 a.m. about a raging structure fire on East Hastings near Garden Drive, prompting a rapid response with over 40 firefighters on the scene.
Matthew Trudeau, a public information officer with the fire department, revealed the fire's ferocity: "Upon arrival, we found the fire spreading rapidly from one building to adjacent properties." This alarming blaze has displaced seven individuals and impacted three businesses.
The buildings, largely composed of wood and featuring numerous void spaces, facilitated the swift spread of flames. Thick smoke wafted through the city, with officials advising residents to keep their windows and doors tightly shut.
As emergency crews battled the inferno, Hastings Street remained closed between Nanaimo Street and Lakewood Drive, causing disruptions in the area.
The cause of this devastating fire is currently under investigation, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty.
Tom Pedriks, creative director of Wohlford & Company—formerly known as Dayton Boots—expressed deep concern for his employees and the loss of their historic workspace. "It’s been operating for 75 years, and there’s an immense amount of irreplaceable equipment inside," he lamented.
He described the building as a potential "tinder box," filled with wood that caught fire easily. The Dayton Boots factory outlet, a staple in East Vancouver since 1946, holds a significant historical connection to the community.
"Sadly, this has happened, and we’ll need to rebuild," Pedriks added, reflecting the spirits of many who cherish Hastings Street's rich heritage.
The fiery devastation also inflicted damage on local favorites like The Indian Chefs restaurant and Windsor Meats, further darkening the day for residents.
