Residents of British Columbia's coastal regions should prepare for an unusually wet Thanksgiving weekend as an atmospheric river is set to make landfall. The BC River Forecast Centre has officially issued a high streamflow advisory for several at-risk areas, highlighting the potential for significant rainfall and rising river levels.

According to the latest advisory, precipitation is expected to begin around the North Coast on Saturday morning, with the intense moisture system progressing down to the Central Coast and eventually reaching Vancouver Island by Monday. The forecast predicts a staggering 100 to 150 millimetres of rain in various parts of the North Coast, and for those in the higher elevations, totals could soar to as much as 250 mm!

Key areas under the advisory include tributaries near Stewart, Bella Coola, Terrace, Smithers, Port Hardy, and Port Alice. Furthermore, a flood watch has additionally been issued for the Kitimat and Kemano River regions, where severe weather conditions may lead to river levels approaching critical heights.

The hydrological models from the River Forecast Centre indicate that these regions might experience flows that could reach or even exceed the historical 5-year return period, signaling potential flooding concerns. As rain continues to spread south, residents in Prince Rupert, the Nass River tributaries, the Bella Coola Region, Kingcome Inlet, and northern Vancouver Island should also be vigilant.

With Thanksgiving festivities just around the corner, everyone is reminded to stay informed and take necessary precautions to avoid any unforeseen weather-related disruptions. So, is your family prepared for a soggy Thanksgiving? Stay tuned for updates, and let’s hope for safety amidst the storm!
