Brace Yourself: Major Rainfall and Thick Fog to Hit the GTA and Southern Ontario!

Get ready for a soggy Sunday across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and much of southern Ontario, with forecasts predicting up to 30 mm of rain in some regions. If you were hoping for a sunny weekend, you might want to rethink those plans!

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning, anticipating a low-pressure system that could bring heavy rain throughout the day. The warning highlights the likelihood of “localized flooding” in low-lying areas due to the frozen ground’s inability to absorb the influx of water. Keep a close eye on rivers, creeks, and culverts where washouts could occur, and ensure children and pets are kept safely away from potentially dangerous waters.

In addition to the rainfall, a fog advisory was issued earlier, indicating that some areas could experience “near-zero” visibility. Although this advisory was lifted for Toronto around 11 a.m., it remains in effect for several surrounding areas, making driving particularly hazardous. Motorists are cautioned to be vigilant as visibility may change drastically in a matter of moments.

The weather warnings stretch from Windsor to Peterborough and even reach as far north as Sudbury. Notably, freezing rain alerts are also active in parts of Quebec and the Ottawa region.

Interestingly, this rainfall is coupled with unseasonably warm temperatures for this time of year, reaching a high of 12°C in Toronto on Sunday. This brief warmth is expected to linger, with highs of 4°C predicted for Monday and Tuesday, dropping to 2°C on Wednesday - the first day of 2025! Expect intermittent rain and possibly light snow as cooler weather sets in.

Stay informed and prepared by keeping up with the latest weather updates. This moist aftermath could lead to a dramatic start to the new year, so make sure to grab your umbrellas and drive safely out there!
