Brayden Yager Takes the Helm as Captain of Team Canada for World Juniors
In an exciting announcement, Hockey Canada has officially appointed Brayden Yager, a promising prospect of the Winnipeg Jets, as the captain for the upcoming 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, set to take place in Ottawa. This marks a significant moment for Yager and his teammates as they gear up for the tournament.
Joining Yager in leadership roles are defenceman Tanner Molendyk and forward Calum Ritchie, who will serve as assistant captains. This leadership trio will be crucial heading into Canada's first pre-tournament match against Switzerland, which will be broadcast live on TSN.
Both Yager and Molendyk were part of Team Canada’s roster for last year’s World Juniors; however, an unfortunate injury meant that Molendyk could not participate in the tournament following a promising start. The stakes are particularly high this year as the team looks to bounce back after finishing off the podium in the previous competition.
In a press release, Yager expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating, 'I am honoured to be named captain of Team Canada for the World Juniors on a team with so many great leaders. I am excited for our group to take the ice in Ottawa and continue working towards our goal of winning a gold medal on home ice. Tanner and Calum are great players and teammates deserving of this honour, and I look forward to serving on the leadership group with them and wearing the Maple Leaf with pride in front of Canadian fans.'
Yager has had an impressive season thus far, tallying 12 goals and 22 assists in just 23 games, split between the Moose Jaw Warriors and the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League. His previous performance at the World Juniors saw him score two goals and contribute three assists over five games, demonstrating his vital role in Canada's roster.
The talented 19-year-old, hailing from Saskatoon, was picked 14th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2023 NHL Draft but was traded to the Jets during the summer, a move made to address the Penguins’ lineup needs after the fallout with prospect Rutger McGroarty.
Molendyk, 19, is off to a solid start this season, securing four goals and achieving 21 points in 21 games for the Saskatoon Blades. He was drafted 24th overall by the Nashville Predators in 2023, showcasing his potential as a key player in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Ritchie is also proving himself with eight goals and 34 points in just 18 contests with the Oshawa Generals. He began his season with the Colorado Avalanche, who selected him 27th overall in the 2023 draft, before transitioning back to junior hockey.
As Team Canada prepares for this prestigious tournament, fans are eager to witness Yager lead a group of incredibly talented young athletes. With the weight of the Maple Leaf on their shoulders, they aim to reclaim gold on Canadian soil and make their country proud. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exhilarating tournament ahead!
