In the aftermath of a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that has tragically claimed over 1,700 lives, the Canadian Red Cross reports that the humanitarian situation in Myanmar remains “very dire.” Days after the disaster struck, Canadian Red Cross operations lead Chiran Livera emphasized the need for immediate support for the afflicted communities.

Livera, speaking from Vancouver, described how teams of both international and local Red Cross workers were already in Myanmar when the earthquake hit on Friday. Despite significant challenges posed by damaged infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, aid distribution has commenced from strategically located warehouses. The aid includes essential supplies like water sanitation equipment, non-perishable food, blankets, household items, and temporary shelters.

Progress is being made, Livera noted, with bulldozers clearing access routes. However, the pressing concern remains the delivery of assistance to those in desperate need. As rescue operations continue in the most affected cities of Mandalay and Naypyitaw, the scope of the disaster unfolds with every passing hour.

In addition to the local devastation, Global Affairs Canada has reported that there are 212 Canadians registered in Myanmar, with nearly 8,000 in neighboring Thailand where the earthquake's impact also extended, causing a nearby high-rise to collapse during construction. While this registration system is voluntary and may not reflect the exact number of Canadians in the region, the safety of citizens remains a priority for the Canadian government.

The Canadian Red Cross has initiated a fundraising campaign to further its relief efforts. Specialized teams stationed in Malaysia are on standby to provide technical assistance if required. The longstanding collaboration with the Myanmar Red Cross has positioned them well to respond effectively; they have ambulances ready to transport injured individuals to unharmed medical facilities.

Despite the chaotic environment due to the ongoing civil conflict following the military coup in 2021, caution involving humanitarian operations remains the priority. Notably, the shadow National Unity Government announced a unilateral ceasefire on Saturday to facilitate aid delivery, demonstrating a glimmer of hope amid the turmoil.

Livera remarked on the invaluable neutrality of the Red Cross, which allows access to areas often unreachable by other humanitarian organizations. They are committed to reaching affected populations despite facing increasing challenges as the situation evolves.

As rescue teams grapple with the aftermath of this disastrous event, the need for generous contributions has never been greater. Canadian citizens requiring consular assistance are encouraged to reach out to the Canadian embassy in Myanmar or other nearby embassies in Thailand, Laos, or China.

The lives of thousands hang in the balance. Will you help bring hope to Myanmar? The time to act is now!
