An unexpected vehicle accident led to a catastrophic fire, completely destroying a popular gas station located east of Edmonton, in Ardrossan. The Tempo service station, situated on the south side of Highway 16 at Range Road 223, was engulfed in flames after a vehicle crashed into its rear, severing a natural gas line.

The dramatic incident unfolded early Sunday morning, shortly before 8 a.m. Strathcona County fire chief Martin Paulson informed reporters that the fire ignited roughly 20 minutes after the crash. “The explosion was so fierce that it led to an aggressive, quick fire,” Paulson explained, noting that fire crews were unable to cut off the natural gas supply prior to the explosion, complicating their firefighting efforts.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as emergency responders acted swiftly to evacuate the building’s occupants—ensuring that everyone was safely out before the flames erupted. Deputy fire chief Devin Capcara stated that the gasoline lines were successfully shut off, alleviating concerns about the potential for additional fuel ignition.

The destroyed gas station, which also included a restaurant, was a well-loved local stop, drawing in residents and travelers alike. To mitigate the fierce flames that were consuming the structure, crews were actively demolishing parts of the building as part of their firefighting strategy.

As of 1:07 p.m., Strathcona County confirmed that fire crews had gained control of the blaze, deploying up to five tankers to the scene. The cause of the accident and subsequent fire remains under investigation, with authorities working diligently to gather more information.

Residents of Ardrossan, located approximately two kilometers southeast of the gas station, were advised to remain vigilant, as smoke from the inferno was reported to be drifting into the area.
