Charity's Inclusive Cycling Program Surges in Popularity Amidst Growing Demand

A charity dedicated to providing inclusive cycling experiences is witnessing an unprecedented spike in participation. Goals Beyond Grass (GBG) Bikes, situated in the picturesque Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, has been on a mission for eight years to fund and provide adapted bicycles tailored for individuals with disabilities.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for GBG's cycling sessions has doubled, drawing in up to 500 participants each month. The charity, which relies heavily on donations and fundraising, is in urgent need of additional resources to expand their fleet of specialized bikes.

Debbie Cooper-Jones, a medically retired military veteran, expressed the transformative impact of these sessions on her life. Having joined GBG in 2017, she has participated in numerous triathlons and logged over 5,000 miles (approximately 8,050 kilometers) using a recumbent bike. "The sessions bring back fun, joy, and independence into my life,” she shared. At 57, Debbie emphasized the importance of adaptability: "It's about finding the right equipment to rediscover the joy of cycling."

The charity is not only committed to making cycling accessible but also aims to connect individuals with nature. Another highlight of their program is the "side-by-side" bike, a four-wheeled tandem bicycle that enables riders to share the pedaling effort. Zade Luker, a day service support worker, often escorts participants like Simon on nine-mile (14-kilometer) excursions through the forest's breathtaking trails, describing how Simon benefits from the sensory experience of the environment.

Married couple Kathryn and Roger Bellchamber are prime examples of how these adapted bikes are paving the way for shared adventures without compromising health. "I come to these sessions because my husband has heart failure and can't cycle otherwise," Kathryn explained, noting that on the adapted bike, she can take the lead while Roger enjoys the ride without strain.

Despite the initial nervousness around riding together, Roger maintains a positive attitude: "It's very nerve-wracking with her controlling the brakes and steering, especially close to ditches, but I can't complain. It's worth it."

As GBG Bikes continues to grow and evolve, the charity remains focused on creating unforgettable experiences for people from all walks of life. The surge in interest also sheds light on the community’s increasing desire for inclusive activities that promote well-being and camaraderie.

With the increase in participants, the charity is calling for support from local sponsors and advocates to help fund the purchase of more adapted bicycles. The future looks bright for GBG Bikes, as they strive to make cycling accessible to everyone, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and joy.
