Chelsea Green's Ambition
Chelsea Green, a homegrown WWE talent from Victoria, B.C., is hopeful that the energy from the crowd at this weekend’s Survivor Series: WarGames will persuade WWE executives to consider Vancouver as a potential host city for WrestleMania.
A Personal Dream
The 33-year-old grappler, who is currently in her second stint with WWE, envisions performing at WrestleMania in her hometown’s iconic B.C. Place. Green’s aspirations are not just personal; she believes that by showcasing the city's enthusiasm for professional wrestling, they can demonstrate that it can sustain larger, more significant events.
“I want Saturday’s event at Rogers Arena to be a complete sell-out, bursting at the seams,” Green expressed. “If Taylor Swift can pull in massive crowds for her concerts, then surely WWE can do the same for WrestleMania!”
Survivor Series: WarGames Event
Survivor Series: WarGames is among WWE’s premium live events and will feature two thrilling WarGames matches, one for women and another for men, where teams of five compete in a double-ring setup enclosed by a steel cage. The matches are not only significant for the show itself but also help build storylines leading up to WrestleMania.
A Vancouver Connection
Green, who has a decade of wrestling experience under her belt, fondly recalls her journey as a wrestling fan and a Vancouver Canucks enthusiast. “Growing up, I didn't have much opportunity to leave the island, so now being in this position, changing in the Canucks' locker rooms, is a dream come true,” she enthused. She revealed that she would don a Quinn Hughes jersey if she steps into the ring at WrestleMania, signifying her deep connection to her home team.
Vancouver's Wrestling History
Vancouver has not hosted a major WWE event in over two decades, with the last being Rock Bottom: In Your House in 1998. Therefore, the Survivor Series is poised to be a significant milestone for both the city and Green, who wishes to uplift the audience’s energy to extraordinary levels. “Canadian fans are savvy and passionate; they can elevate the atmosphere,” she said.
Economic Impact of WrestleMania
Cities vie for the opportunity to host WrestleMania, which can significantly boost local economies—pumping an estimated $200 million into the host region. Past events have taken place in cities like Philadelphia and Inglewood, California, while Toronto is known for hosting two WrestleManias, the last being in 2002.
Community Engagement
Green recently enjoyed her time back in Vancouver, participating in various community events, including a fan march leading up to the Grey Cup and attending a Canucks game. Although she’s not officially listed to compete at Survivor Series, Green hinted at unexpectedly making an appearance, much to fans’ delight.
Evolving as a Wrestler
In her wrestling career, Green has been fine-tuning her moveset, incorporating elements from her husband, Matt Cardona, a former WWE star. “I try to bring in bits of his style, as it’s important to keep those influences alive,” she said. Though the couple shares a passion for wrestling, they consciously keep their professional lives separate when at home in Florida. Green quipped, “When I land in Orlando, I like to switch off from wrestling. You can catch me watching a cheesy Christmas movie instead!”
The Future of WrestleMania in Vancouver
As anticipation builds for Survivor Series this Saturday, Green’s hopes for a future WrestleMania in Vancouver hang in the balance. Can the fans rally and show WWE that the city deserves its shot on the grand stage? Only time will tell!
