A dispute has erupted between the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW) and Ocean Choice International (OCI) regarding the dire situation of workers at the groundfish plant in Fortune, Newfoundland and Labrador. The FFAW claims that approximately 50 employees find themselves without enough work weeks to qualify for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits, putting their livelihoods at substantial risk.

Concerns from Union Representatives

FFAW staff representative Johan Joensen recently visited the Fortune plant, where he expressed deep concern about the insufficient working conditions. “This year, operations at the plant have totaled roughly eight weeks,” Joensen noted, emphasizing that the facility primarily processed redfish during that short window. However, Joensen pointed out, “Not everything went as smoothly as OCI had anticipated.”

Historical Context

Historically, the plant relied on an exemption for exporting yellowtail (flounder) that was deemed too small for local processing, which allowed workers to accumulate 15 weeks of work. Unfortunately, due to ongoing challenges, OCI has only offered workers about eight weeks of employment this year, leading to frustration and uncertainty among the workforce.

Response from OCI Management

OCI President Blaine Sullivan acknowledged the difficulties, indicating that the small size of the redfish has hindered profitability. He also described yellowtail catch rates as unimpressive and disappointing for the company. Nevertheless, Sullivan transitioned the conversation towards optimism, stating that OCI is actively exploring solutions for the small number of workers who are struggling to satisfy their EI requirements.

“Most employees at the plant have met the necessary weeks for EI,” he mentioned, putting that figure at around 95 percent. “Currently, we are focused on just three individuals who we are working with to ensure they have sufficient weeks this season.”
