Cornell University Cancels Performance by Kehlani

In a surprising turn of events, Cornell University has cancelled a scheduled performance by renowned artist Kehlani due to her outspoken pro-Palestine views, which have been labeled "antisemitic" by the school’s administration. This decision has sparked significant debate across campus.

Kehlani, whose full name is Kehlani Ashley Parrish, was set to headline Slope Day, a beloved annual event that celebrates the conclusion of the academic year. However, following her announcement as the performer, Cornell's community raised concerns regarding her previous statements and social media posts.

In a public statement, Cornell President Michael I. Kotlikoff expressed that he had received numerous complaints from the university community. He stated, "Many are angry, hurt, and confused that Slope Day would feature an artist who has expressed antisemitic and anti-Israel sentiments. While every artist has the right to express their views, Slope Day is about uniting our community, not dividing it."

Kotlikoff acknowledged that his decision would have both supporters and detractors, affirming that it was necessary to maintain community safety at this high-profile event. "I believe this is the right thing to do," he emphasized.

He also assured that future performer selection processes will be revised to better reflect the university's values, stating that Cornell aims to be an inclusive space for all students during such significant celebrations.

Kehlani’s Continued Advocacy for Palestine

Despite the backlash from Cornell, Kehlani remains fervent in her support for Palestine. In June 2024, she released a poignant pro-Palestine anthem titled 'Next 2 U'. The music video showcased her and a group of dancers wearing keffiyehs in a powerful display of solidarity with the Palestinian people, turning lyrics originally romantic into a bold political statement.

In a candid interview with The Breakfast Club, Kehlani revealed the personal and professional repercussions of her activism. While she faced no backlash from her record label, she noted a loss of potential collaborations and brand deals post-release, stating, "I can go to sleep at night knowing I stood up for what I believe in."
