As Canada Post's nationwide strike reaches its one-week milestone, calls for the federal government to intervene are intensifying. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) issued a compelling plea on Friday, emphasizing the urgent need for action to halt the ongoing labour disruption that has paralyzed mail and parcel services across the nation.
With more than 55,000 Canada Post workers walking off the job last Friday, various post offices have temporarily closed their doors. The striking employees' action coincides with grim financial news for the Crown corporation, which has reported staggering multi-million-dollar losses in the third quarter and is on track for its seventh consecutive annual deficit this year.
In a letter addressed to Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon, the CFIB, representing nearly 97,000 small and medium-sized business owners, has stressed that the fallout from the strike is hitting Canadian businesses hard, particularly as we approach the crucial holiday season. The organization firmly believes that small enterprises cannot bear the financial burden of disruptions caused by labour negotiations gone awry.
“Just as you have intervened twice this year, we urge you to step in with binding arbitration or back-to-work legislation,
