Discover the Incredible Brain-Boosting Power of Music at Duncan’s East Coast Festive Kitchen Party
On December 13, from 1 to 3 p.m., the Duncan United Church will come alive with the sounds and rhythms of music as the Brain on Wheels Rehab Society (BOWRS) hosts its exciting 'East Coast Festive Kitchen Party.' This free community event promises to showcase the profound benefits of music on brain health, aligning with their mission to foster wellness through the celebrated Six Pillars of Brain Health.
“Music is more than mere entertainment; it’s true medicine for the mind,” emphasized Claire Leitch, a recreation therapist intern at BOWRS. “Our goal is to inspire everyone through music and engage the community in the journey of wellness.”
Founded by Chris Rafuse, a former executive director at the Cowichan Brain Injury Society, BOWRS has quickly established itself as a vital resource for cognitive rehabilitation not just for individuals with brain injuries, but for anyone seeking to enhance their brain function. Rafuse, motivated by personal experiences with cognitive impairments within his family, aims to make brain health support accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances.
“Cognitive impairment impacted my family profoundly, leading me to create BOWRS and provide vital services for brain health, whether one is experiencing dementia, anxiety, or the effects of a stroke,” Rafuse shared. “We are dedicated to empowering individuals throughout all stages of life, offering specialized programs for all, including those needing assistance with functional neurological disorders.”
BOWRS, which formally launched in July, focuses on a mission of optimizing brain health. Its services encompass case management, educational initiatives, individual and group programs, peer support, and vital assistance with errands and medical appointments. With therapeutic recreation at its core, the organization aims to enhance the quality of life and foster recovery in those with various brain health disorders.
The festive kitchen party will feature a variety of engaging activities highlighting the Six Pillars of Brain Health: physical exercise, mental stimulation, adequate sleep, stress management, social connection, and nutrition. The event will also be graced by local MLA Debra Toporowski, who will mark the occasion with an official opening. “Welcoming Debra to our event is a true honor,” Rafuse stated. “Her inclusive leadership inspires hope for positive change within our community.”
In the spirit of community, several local sponsors, including Dairy Queen, Coffee On the Moon, Thrifty’s, and Real Canadian Superstore, have generously supported this initiative. Attendees can enjoy delicious snacks, warm beverages, and even a taste of hot apple cider, while donations are welcomed to further support BOWRS’s mission.
Rafuse encourages everyone to join in, stating, “Come to our kitchen party and meet your brain! Understanding how different parts of the brain function can deepen your appreciation for its role in our daily lives.”
“Social connection is essential for mental health,” Rafuse elaborated. “Through our therapeutic recreation initiatives, we aim to strengthen these connections while highlighting the crucial relationship between brain health and recreational activities such as music, art, and dance.”
