An Annual Tradition on Vancouver Island

Every Monday morning, while Vancouver Island’s natural chorus of crashing waves and chirping birds fills the air, a dedicated group of volunteers sets out on a mission: to count the elusive brant geese. As part of a yearly initiative, these passionate nature enthusiasts survey the stunning shorelines of Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

Meet the Brave Brant Watchers

Amongst the volunteers is the vibrant Toni Wyckoff, who leads the charge at the busy French Creek Marina. Despite the expectations, not a single brant was spotted there, but the team remained undeterred, eager for what lay ahead.

Chasing the Mysterious Geese!

The black brant (Branta bernicla), a small yet striking sea goose, migrates from the Arctic and spends winters in Baja California, making rest stops along the breathtaking West Coast of Canada. These volunteers track their movements from February through May, braving rain or shine, with an unwavering spirit.

Hopes High at Columbia Beach

Next up was the famed Columbia Beach. Although previous weeks boasted thousands of geese, this time luck wasn’t on their side. "Nope," exclaimed Linda Horspool, disheartened but resolute. The volunteers continued to scan the skies, photographing and noting other bird species instead.

The Geese’s Secret Habits

With keen eyes and eager hearts, each volunteer contributed, sharing insights on why brants frequent certain spots. "They prefer areas with abundant eelgrass, especially if it's dressed in herring spawn!" remarked Liz Thorne, illuminating the mystery behind the geese’s habits.

A Surprise in the Sky

Just as spirits were wavering, a captivating sight unfolded! A flock of about 30 brant geese soared overhead, creating a flurry of excitement as everyone scrambled to count and capture photos. Nature’s surprises made the day worthwhile.

A Thrilling Count and Future Anticipations

In the end, the group tallied a modest 77 brants, overshadowed by reports of thousands in less-visited areas. As they wrapped up their outing, plans were made for the next week's adventure, enthused about the ever-changing presence of these majestic birds.
