Discover the Secrets of Healthy Aging: Join the Exciting Fair at Western!

As a dedicated lawyer immersed in the intense world of family law, Julie Lee often found herself overwhelmed by the demands of both her profession and her family. For years, she neglected her physical health, leading to feelings of burnout and a decline in mental wellness. “I was a seat-locked professional for decades and unsuccessful in creating opportunities to take care of my physical health,” Lee admitted. But everything changed when she decided to embrace a new lifestyle through a community exercise class.

In her retirement, Lee took a momentous step by heeding her friends' encouragement to join an exercise program guided by Debbie DeVries, an educator at the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging (CCAA) at Western University. “It’s made a huge difference in both my physical and mental health,” she shared, pleased to discover a supportive environment that respects and challenges older adults.

Her experience isn't just a personal victory; it's a testament to the robust community spirit cultivated by the CCAA. Lee found more than just fitness through the class—she found friendship, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. “We are a diverse group with very different life experiences, but we share a common goal: to be fit and happy,” she remarked.

This powerful transformation in Lee’s life exemplifies the positive effects of combining physical activity with social engagement. Recognizing such holistic approaches is central to the CCAA’s newly expanded mission. “It’s not just about physical activity and exercise, but also the social connections that contribute to healthy aging,” said Lindsay Nagamatsu, a kinesiology professor and a leading member of the CCAA.

To promote these vital aspects of healthy aging, the CCAA is hosting an exciting Healthy Aging Fair on November 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Goodwill Community Ballroom in London, Ontario. This free event gathers researchers, health care partners, and older adults to explore valuable resources for aging well.

The fair will kick off with a keynote address from Kate Mulligan, a pioneering advocate for social prescribing—an approach connecting individuals to supportive resources that enhance their overall wellbeing. Participants can also look forward to a panel discussion featuring notable Western researchers who will share insights on caregiving, social connectivity, and health matters crucial for seniors.

Moreover, attendees will have the chance to engage with over 20 vendors and service providers who offer vital healthcare services, like hearing screenings and programs from local organizations dedicated to senior wellness.

Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to discover how to live healthier and happier as you age! Join the Healthy Aging Fair to connect with like-minded individuals and take control of your health journey. Lee’s newfound energy has even led her to mentor a younger lawyer, demonstrating the powerful ripple effect of investing in one’s health. “Exercise has not only revived my strength but has given me the clarity to pursue a fulfilling post-retirement life,” she said.

Mark your calendars for an event that could change your life!
