Don’t Risk It! Protect Yourself with the Flu Vaccine This Season!

2024-10-15

Author: Charlotte

As the flu season approaches, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is urging all residents aged 6 months and older to get their flu vaccine as soon as possible. With a predicted surge in respiratory illnesses due to the simultaneous circulation of influenza (flu), COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), now is the time to arm yourself against these threats. The flu can lead to severe complications and hospitalizations, particularly for vulnerable populations like older adults and young children. The annual flu vaccine remains your best defense.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

Starting October 15, 2024, participating local pharmacies will kick off the flu vaccination campaign, especially for those at high risk of flu-related complications. This includes:

- **Children under 5 years:** Their developing immune systems and smaller airways make them more susceptible.

- **Adults 65 years and older:** Weakened immune systems and common underlying conditions increase their risk.

- **Residents and staff of congregate living settings:** This includes those in chronic care facilities and retirement homes.

- **Pregnant individuals:** Changes in the immune system, heart, and lungs during pregnancy heighten their vulnerability to flu.

- **People with underlying health conditions:** Such as asthma, heart disease, or diabetes.

- **First Nations, Inuit, and Métis community members.**

- **Individuals from racialized and equity-deserving communities.**

- **First responders and healthcare workers.**

- **Those exposed to animals:** Workers in poultry, livestock, slaughterhouses, and veterinarians are especially at risk.

On October 21, 2024, OPH Community Clinics and Neighbourhood Health and Wellness Hubs will open their doors for high-risk individuals facing access barriers, including:

- **Children aged 6 months to under 2 years and their household members.**

- **High-risk individuals without OHIP or those struggling to find vaccines elsewhere.**

Come October 28, 2024, everyone aged 6 months and older—who lives, works, or studies in Ontario—will be eligible for the flu vaccine through local pharmacies and healthcare providers. Plus, updated COVID-19 vaccines will also be available to everyone seeking immunity.

How to Get Your Flu Vaccine:

Your local pharmacy is your go-to spot for the annual flu vaccine, especially in rural areas. Contact them today! It’s important to note, however, that pharmacies cannot vaccinate children under 2 years old.

If you prefer, check with your primary healthcare provider to inquire about flu vaccine availability. OPH will also provide flu vaccines at Community Clinics and Neighbourhood Health and Wellness Hubs, with options for appointments as well as drop-in visits.

Maximize Your Protection: Get Both Vaccines!

This flu season, consider doubling your defense by receiving both the flu vaccine and the updated COVID-19 vaccine simultaneously. It’s safe for individuals aged 6 months and older to get both vaccines at once, increasing your immunity against two formidable foes. Speak to your healthcare provider or pharmacist for more details on co-administration.

In addition, OPH continues to track respiratory virus trends, providing updates on their social media channels and on their website. For comprehensive information on respiratory illnesses, preventive measures, and care options, visit OttawaPublicHealth.ca/RespVirus.
