Ali Hayton, the owner of the marketplace, has recognized the ongoing struggles with exchange rates affecting cross-border shoppers. "Given the challenges lately, we brainstormed how we could make it easier for our Canadian friends who haven't been visiting as often. While matching the exchange rate isn't feasible for us, we wanted to create a tempting middle ground," she explained.

New Attractions Await!

With the current exchange rate hovering around US$0.72 for CAD $1, Hayton hopes this enticing deal will lure Canadians down to explore the newly opened golf course, indulge in some shopping, and enjoy a meal.

A Community Reliant on Canada

Point Roberts, home to about 1,100 residents, exists as a unique Washington state community nestled just south of Tsawwassen, Canada. Hayton emphasized the vital role Canadian customers play in the survival of their marketplace. Without them, she estimated their store would be a fraction of its current size, underscoring the importance of cross-border traffic.

Challenges from the Pandemic and Political Climate

Recently, fellow business Point To Point Parcel announced its closure after 24 years, citing a staggering 75% drop in business. Hayton explained that the hardships faced during the pandemic were exacerbated by a fraught political climate, which stoked fears around border crossings and tariffs.

"The harsh rhetoric from Washington has made many apprehensive about coming over. But we’re hopeful that as tensions ease, Canadians will remember how crucial they are to our community, especially during tough times. We truly can’t thrive without them," she added.
