Flu Cases Surge: CDC Warns of Potential Epidemic Peak This Week!
As we approach the end of the year, seasonal flu cases are projected to reach alarming levels, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) forecasting hospital visits to soar to around 100,000 this week. The CDC urges individuals to prioritize vaccination to safeguard themselves during the upcoming holiday period.
Recent data reveals a staggering increase in flu-related outpatient and emergency room visits, climbing to 94,882 last week—a sharp 16.6% rise from the previous week. CDC Deputy Director-General Tseng Shu-hui warns that this trend suggests the country could be on the brink of an epidemic.
In terms of severity, 23 cases with serious complications were reported last week alone, contributing to a disturbing total of 350 such cases since October 1. Notably, individuals aged 65 and older accounted for a significant 57% of these severe cases, underscoring the vulnerability of older populations.
As colder temperatures draw families together and prompt travel during the holiday season, the risk of flu transmission amplifies. The rate of emergency room visits has accelerated, now reaching 10.8%, perilously close to the 11% threshold that indicates an epidemic.
Alarmingly, the CDC reports that over 90% of those who suffered flu-related deaths had not received this year’s vaccine. Vaccination rates have declined compared to the same time last year, with only 43.9% of seniors and 62.2% of preschool children having received their flu shots—well below the CDC's public health targets.
With vaccines requiring approximately two weeks to confer effective immunity, health officials are stressing the urgency of vaccination, particularly for older adults and those in high-risk categories.
In addition to the flu crisis, COVID-19 continues to pose challenges, with 13 new cases reported last week. The cumulative total from September 1 to the present stands at 411 cases, resulting in 92 deaths. As with the flu, most affected individuals were aged 65 or older or had pre-existing chronic conditions. Alarmingly, among cases confirmed since October 1, a staggering 98% of patients had not received the latest JN.1 vaccine.
As we navigate this winter season, it is crucial to remain vigilant about vaccinations for both flu and COVID-19. Protect yourself and your loved ones as we enter one of the busiest times of the year. Don’t wait—vaccinate!
