Four Truck Drivers Face Charges After Series of Collisions on Northern Ontario's Highway 11
On a treacherous Wednesday morning, a string of collisions on Highway 11 led to charges against four commercial vehicle drivers, spotlighting the urgent need for road safety during harsh winter weather. As the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) managed the chaos on the road, the highway was temporarily closed, allowing authorities to clear the wreckage and assess the situation.
First Incident Near Driftwood
The first incident unfolded around 9:30 a.m. near Driftwood, where OPP were on-site to manage traffic while a vehicle was being retrieved from a ditch. During this operation, a stationary commercial motor vehicle (CMV) was unexpectedly rear-ended by another CMV. The driver responsible, a 20-year-old from Saskatoon, was subsequently charged with careless driving causing bodily harm. Tragically, a passenger in this vehicle sustained serious, though non-life-threatening injuries, necessitating transportation to a local hospital via ambulance.
Multi-Vehicle Collision Near Hearst
As the day progressed, police were called to another alarming scene nearly 120 kilometers west of Hearst, where six CMVs were involved in a multi-vehicle collision. This incident resulted in charges for three additional drivers: a 31-year-old from Cambridge, and two 30-year-olds from Brampton, all cited for careless driving.
Highway Reopened, but Caution Urged
By 4 p.m., Highway 11 was finally cleared, but the OPP cautioned drivers that weather and road conditions remained volatile across the James Bay area. With forecasts predicting more challenging weather, authorities emphasized the critical need for extra caution from all road users, particularly those operating heavy vehicles.
Safety Recommendations
The OPP recommended practical safety measures such as reducing speed, maintaining increased following distances, and avoiding abrupt maneuvers in snowy or icy conditions. Additionally, they stressed the importance of staying informed about road and weather updates—traveling only when absolutely necessary.
Commitment to Road Safety
In light of these incidents, the OPP reiterated its commitment to road safety and robust law enforcement to mitigate the risk of further collisions, particularly during the perilous winter months. As more drivers take to the roads in these challenging conditions, adhering to safety guidelines is paramount for everyone’s well-being.
