Get Vaccinated This Fall/Winter: Your Ultimate Guide to Stay Protected!

2024-10-04

As we approach the fall and winter seasons, Public Health Sudbury & Districts has exciting news: COVID-19 and seasonal influenza vaccines are now available in our area! This crucial vaccination campaign is set to minimize the risk of serious illnesses from COVID-19, the flu, and the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during colder months.

Starting in early October, high-risk groups will be prioritized for the updated COVID-19 and influenza vaccines, with broader access opening up to the general public on October 28. It's essential to schedule your vaccine appointments through pharmacies or healthcare providers as soon as possible. Remember, it is completely safe to receive both vaccines at the same time!

Protect Your Loved Ones

“Our community sees lung infections among the top 5 causes of death,” emphasizes Dr. Mustafa Hirji, Acting Medical Officer of Health. As we transition indoors due to the chill and celebrate various holidays, common viruses spread more readily. Annual vaccinations are a vital way to shield your family, friends, and especially those who are most vulnerable.

COVID-19 Vaccine Details

From early October, a new mRNA COVID-19 vaccine will be rolled out, first for high-risk groups. This includes residents and staff at long-term care homes, older adults aged 65 and above, pregnant individuals, First Nation, Métis, and Inuit community members, those with chronic medical conditions, and healthcare workers. Everyone aged 6 months and older will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine starting October 28. Check the Ontario Ministry of Health's website for current eligibility.

Seasonal Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

Similar to the COVID-19 vaccine, the seasonal flu vaccine will prioritize high-risk populations in early October, such as children aged 6 months to 4 years, long-term care residents, older adults, pregnant people, and those with chronic health issues. The general public will have access beginning October 28.

RSV Vaccine Availability

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the RSV vaccination program for high-risk older adults continues this year. Adults aged 60 and above who are categorized as high-risk may qualify for the vaccine, which can also be purchased at pharmacies if you're not eligible for public funding. Infants and pregnant individuals will have expanded access to RSV immunization starting the 2024-25 season, based on healthcare provider advice.

Booking Your Vaccination

Vaccines are readily available at various local sites, including healthcare providers, walk-in clinics, and pharmacies. To locate participating pharmacies in your area, visit the Ontario Ministry of Health website.

This year, Public Health will offer dedicated COVID-19 and flu vaccine clinics primarily for: - Children aged 6 months to 11 years and their caregivers. - Individuals 6 months and older without a health card.

For information regarding RSV immunizations for older adults, infants, and pregnant individuals, reach out to your healthcare provider.

Stay Safe This Season

Here are some additional precautions you can take to protect yourself: - Stay updated on vaccinations—get your COVID-19 and flu shots as soon as you're eligible. - Wear a well-fitted mask in crowded indoor public places. - Keep indoor spaces well-ventilated by opening windows when possible and switching HVAC systems to 'on' instead of 'auto.' - Always cover coughs and sneezes, disposing of tissues properly, and wash your hands thoroughly afterward. - Practice frequent hand washing for at least 15 seconds.
