In a bizarre turn of events, a 62-year-old man from the United States found himself in hot water after his GPS device misled him to the Canadian border, where he was arrested for unlawfully possessing a firearm.

On Sunday, the commercial truck driver, who was en route to Michigan with a shipment, accidentally wound up at the border crossing. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials reported that the driver inadvertently approached the Canadian border without the necessary paperwork—prompting border agents to send him back into the U.S.

Upon his return, the driver voluntarily disclosed that he was in possession of a firearm. However, what initially seemed like a routine case escalated when CBP officers conducted a secondary inspection. During this examination, they discovered a Hi-Point C9 semi-automatic 9mm pistol along with 40 rounds of live ammunition stashed in the vehicle.

Further inquiry into the driver's background revealed that he had prior felony convictions, which legally barred him from owning firearms. As a result, he was taken into custody by border agents before being handed over to the New York State Police. The charges leveled against him include criminal possession of a weapon, raising questions about how such a serious oversight could occur.

Gaetano Cordone, Area Port Director, commented on the incident, emphasizing, “Our CBP Officers maintain their vigilance while screening travelers entering the United States. Together with our State and Local partners, we were successful in arresting this felon and removing a firearm off our streets.”
