These protests were fueled by Trump’s escalating interest in Greenland, a topic he revisited in a meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte just days prior to the rally. During this meeting, when questioned about the idea of annexation, Trump boldly proclaimed, “I think it will happen.” He further insisted on the island’s strategic significance for US national security, referencing existing military bases established there.

The statement read, “We cannot accept the repeated statements on annexation and control of Greenland. Such conduct is unacceptable to friends and allies in a defense alliance.”
