This remarkable discovery stems from a fossil unearthed nearly 40 years ago in Jiangxi Province, eastern China, and it highlights the intriguing biodiversity of ankylosaurs during the Late Cretaceous period.

Led by the acclaimed academician Xu Xing from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the research emphasizes the importance of this discovery in understanding the evolution of ancient dinosaurs. "The identification of Huaxiazhoulong shouwen enhances our comprehension of the ankylosaur diversity that thrived in southeast China during the Late Cretaceous," Xu explained.

Remarkably, this significant fossil was initially found in 1986 by a farmer who stumbled upon it while working in his fields in Guangchang County. Following this chance encounter, local authorities conducted a rescue excavation, leading to the classification of this specimen as one of the best-preserved ankylosaur fossils ever found in China, affectionately named the "Guangchang ankylosaur."

Upon reconstruction, scientists determined that "Huaxiazhoulong shouwen" measured over six meters long and roamed the Earth approximately 72 to 84 million years ago. This herbivorous dinosaur likely feasted on a diet abundant in ferns, seeds, and various low-lying plants, which were common in its lush environment.

Characterized by its hefty build and protective armoured plates, "Huaxiazhoulong shouwen" boasted formidable defensive features, including a remarkably robust tail ending in an impressive club-like structure resembling a large pomelo. These adaptations illustrate the extent to which ankylosaurs developed to survive predation in their ecosystems.

This discovery is not just significant for paleontology; it solidifies China's status as a powerhouse in the field. With over 300 identified dinosaur species to their name, China now accounts for nearly one-third of all known dinosaur species globally.
