In a remarkable step towards inclusive living, a new intergenerational apartment building has officially opened its doors in Calgary's northwest, designed specifically to cater to young, Indigenous single mothers, their children, and seniors seeking stability and community support.

The HomeSpace Society unveiled Hope Heights on Tuesday, an impressive four-storey structure located at 117 12 Avenue NW featuring 35 one-bedroom rental units tailored for affordability and safety.

What sets Hope Heights apart is its unique intergenerational housing model, which encourages a nurturing community where seniors pass down their wisdom and Indigenous traditions to the younger generation. Meanwhile, the youth provide valuable companionship and assistance with daily living tasks to their senior neighbors, effectively bridging the age gap and fostering mutual support.

The initiative is not just about housing; it is about creating a holistic environment that mitigates social isolation and promotes health among its residents. Programming at Hope Heights will focus on integrating cultural activities, mentorship opportunities, and essential life-skills training, all backed by dedicated case management staff available during the day to ensure residents are supported.

Hope Heights has garnered substantial financial backing, receiving $7.3 million from the federal government, $2.1 million from the province, and nearly $873,000 from the city of Calgary. Additionally, a generous $1.3 million donation from Hopewell, a local builder, further underscores the community's commitment to tackling housing challenges.

Construction for the project began in March 2023 and successfully reached completion by October 2024, staying true to its timeline.

This development marks the end of the former RESOLVE campaign, which initiated back in 2012, where ten Calgary homebuilders collectively contributed $1.4 million each to combat affordable housing shortages in the region.

With its launch, Hope Heights is not merely providing shelter but is also igniting hope and connection within the community—paving the way for a future where generations learn from and support one another.
