Guelph Duo Quits Jobs to Embark on Epic Global Cycling Adventure – Here’s Why You Should Consider It Too!
In a bold move that many only dream of, Adam Zgraja and Maddie Carter, a couple from Guelph, Ontario, decided to leave their conventional jobs behind for an exhilarating cycling journey around the globe. This past year has been packed with adventure as the two passionate cyclists explored the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia.
Before embarking on their journey, Maddie held a contract position with the City of Guelph, while Adam was working as a project manager for a construction company. The idea for this life-changing trip sprouted during the pandemic, when they found themselves working from home. “It was a COVID dream,” Maddie shared. “I started reading books and watching YouTube videos about cycling and travel, and Adam, being the bike enthusiast he is, was all in.” Together, they envisioned a year-long exploration of places they had only dreamt of.
As enthusiasts of cycling, Adam volunteered at the Freehub Community Bike Centre and was actively involved in the Guelph Coalition for Active Transportation (GCAT). Before setting off, he meticulously assembled their bikes with customized frames and parts to ensure they were fully equipped for their travels.
In January 2024, with their home rented out and helmets on, the couple took off on a journey of discovery. “New Zealand was a place I had always wanted to visit,” Adam revealed. They started their adventure in Auckland, where they quickly faced the physical challenges posed by the mountainous terrain. “The first week was tough because we weren’t physically prepared,” he remarked. “But after we overcame that initial challenge, we found our rhythm.”
As they cycled across New Zealand, they engaged with the local cycling community, utilizing a platform called “Warm Showers,” where locals hosted travelers. “It was amazing to connect with residents who shared insights and offered tips for our journey,” Maddie said.
After three months in New Zealand, the couple flew to Bali, Indonesia, going on to cycle through Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Many of the regions they traversed are popular among cycle tourists for their affordability and welcoming atmosphere. They reveled in the unique experiences with locals who often treated them like celebrities due to their unconventional mode of travel.
Their days on the road were filled with stunning sights and delicious culinary delights. “We were able to eat whatever we wanted, including ice cream every day!” Maddie laughed, reminiscing about the delectable mince and cheese pies they enjoyed in New Zealand.
The couple adopted a practical approach to packing, learning to manage their gear while keeping it minimal. However, the adventure wasn’t without its challenges: they faced sweltering heat in Vietnam and unexpected weather conditions in New Zealand, including a week in Thailand where they dealt with flat tires almost daily.
Following their Asian tour, Adam and Maddie extended their adventure with a month in Spain to soak up some additional warmth before heading back home. Since their return to Guelph, they reflect fondly on the hidden treasures they discovered off the beaten path. “Cycling offers a unique lens through which to embrace a country’s culture,” Maddie explained.
As part of their efforts to encourage others to consider cycling as a means of travel, the couple will be sharing their experiences and hosting a photography event in April at the Fixed Gear Canteen, facilitated by GCAT.
Mike Darmon, chair of advocacy for GCAT, emphasized how their journey could inspire others. “Maddie and Adam live a 'car-lite' lifestyle, and their story showcases the remarkable places you can discover by bike,” he said.
Zgraja also expressed how accessible cycling tours are. “Once you try it, you find it’s really straightforward. Sure, there are challenges, but the experience is incredibly rewarding!”
Reflecting on their adventure, Maddie and Adam advocate for seizing the day: “People often wait until retirement to embark on such journeys. We believed we should do it now—while we are still able to experience everything life has to offer. This journey has enriched our personal growth and strengthened our relationship.”
While they are currently considering future cycling adventures in Europe, the couple is equally excited to explore new paths right in Ontario, encouraging others to embrace the beauty of cycling adventures without leaving home.
So, are you ready to ditch the daily grind and experience the world on two wheels? Your adventure awaits!
