Fans of the horror-comedy franchise Happy Death Day can finally breathe a sigh of relief as franchise star Jessica Rothe announced exciting news at a recent double feature screening of the first two movies. According to Rothe, the long-awaited third installment of the series is now officially “moving forward”!.

The announcement was made during an event at the American Cinematheque, where Rothe was joined on stage by director Christopher Landon, who confirmed her statement with enthusiasm, declaring, “It is moving forward.”

It’s been a staggering six years since the release of Happy Death Day 2U, leaving fans wondering why the successful series had not made its return. There had been discussions between Universal and Blumhouse about potentially transforming the third installment into a three-part miniseries for the streaming platform Peacock, but those plans ultimately did not materialize.

Back in 2020, Landon hinted that the working title for the sequel was Happy Death Day to Us, with the promise that it would be “different than the other two films.” This has only fueled anticipation among fans eager for a fresh take on the beloved series.

Jessica Rothe expressed her desire to finish the trilogy in a previous interview, stating, “I would love if we had the opportunity to complete the trilogy. I know that Chris has it all mapped out in his genius brain, but I also know that we only want to complete it if we get to do it right.” She also mentioned that regardless of when the third film is made, whether it's in five years or even 20, she firmly believes the story of her character, Tree, will be told: “I have a feeling if we pull a Jamie Lee Curtis from Halloween and Tree comes back as a badass 50-year-old, we will get to tell the rest of the story.”

The official status of Happy Death Day 3 seems to be in its earliest stages, but this is the first time the project has received a hopeful green light. With Rothe and Landon at the helm, fans can expect a thrilling continuation of their favorite time-loop horror saga.
