Nestled in a town renowned for its kid-friendly beaches, delicious boardwalk treats, and nostalgic charm, Gillian's Wonderland Pier was operated by the family of the town's mayor, Jay Gillian, whose ancestors have entertained guests since 1929. The property is currently owned by Icona Resorts, which previously attempted to pivot to a luxurious hotel project that was ultimately rejected by city authorities. CEO Eustace Mita had acquired the park in 2021 after the Gillian family faced financial difficulties that threatened its existence. Mita had offered support during tough times but set a deadline that has now passed without the hoped-for turnaround.

Gillian’s struggles were compounded by the lasting impact of Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the economic fallout from the pandemic, and escalating operational costs due to New Jersey's minimum wage increases, leaving the business in significant debt.

As Ocean City faces a future without this beloved amusement park, community leaders and locals alike are grappling with the loss of cherished memories and the pivotal role Gillian's Wonderland Pier played in making vacations truly special. “You look at it with your heart, and you say, ‘You’re losing all the cherished memories and all the history; how can you let that go?’" Merritt lamented. “And then you look at it with your head and you say, ‘They are the reason this town is profitable; how can you let that go?’”
