Tragic Loss during the Holiday Season

The holiday season has been overshadowed by profound grief for the Cormier family of New Brunswick. Scott Cormier recently faced an unimaginable tragedy when his 43-year-old brother, Chris, died in a motor vehicle accident in Moncton on December 15. Just days later, on December 20, Chris's spirited four-year-old daughter, Matilda, succumbed to injuries she sustained in the same head-on collision.

"This Christmas felt cold – just empty," Scott lamented. "We had planned celebrations with turkey dinners and gifts, but it all faded into the background of this devastating loss. We aspire to commemorate our loved ones properly in the future, but right now, the festive spirit seems impossible to capture."

Survivors and Family Memories

Chris and Matilda are survived by Eiryn, Chris's wife and Matilda’s mother, as well as Emilia, their younger daughter, who is grappling with the absence of her sister. Family members gathered at Cap-Acadie Dental Clinic in Cap-Pelé, a business started by Chris and Eiryn just last June, to remember their loved ones.

Scott described Chris as not only a savvy businessman but also a devoted family man. "He cherished his daughters deeply," he said. Eiryn, hailing from Venezuela, nurtured a multilingual environment in their home, allowing Matilda to speak Spanish, French, and English, albeit in delightful combinations typical of her age.

Matilda's Vibrant Spirit

Matilda was known for her vivacious spirit; she adored dancing and would often perform for family and friends. "Her energy lit up every room," Scott reminisced, reflecting on the unbearable loss of all the moments they had anticipated watching her grow. According to family members, Matilda would have celebrated her fifth birthday in March.

Eiryn's Strength Amidst Heartbreak

The emotional toll on Eiryn is immense. "She’s showing remarkable strength considering she lost both her husband and daughter within days," Scott noted. Matilda's step-grandmother, Heather Parsons, described her as "the joy of our lives," sharing memories of her interest in gymnastics, beach outings, and dressing up as Disney princesses. "It's like living a nightmare, with every corner reminding us of them. They'll be missed forever," Heather shared, conveying a sense of enduring love and connection even in absence.

The Accident Details

The tragic accident occurred on December 15 when Chris and a 32-year-old woman from Moncton were involved in a head-on collision near an overpass on Highway 15. Chris was initially rushed to Moncton Hospital, where he later passed away. Matilda was taken to the IWK Hospital in Halifax, but unfortunately, she couldn’t recover from her severe injuries.

As the community rallies around Eiryn in this heartbreaking time, a GoFundMe campaign launched by a friend has already raised nearly $50,000 to support her financially.
