In a touching moment for all who knew her, the family of Nancy Ellen Hurd (née Gray) announces her peaceful passing on November 27, 2024, at the age of 75. For over 39 years, she was the cherished wife of Brian Hurd and a devoted mother to six beloved children: Michael (Samanthi), Alyee (Jay), David (Erin), Heather (Darrin), Mark (Tabetha), and Katie. As a proud grandmother, she adored her grandchildren: Nathan, Grace, Kayla, Taylor, Sam, Jack, Spencer, Andrew, Alyssa, and Ella. Nancy was the beloved daughter of Helen Gray and is lovingly remembered by her brother Lorne (Louise). She was preceded in death by her father, Archibald Gray, and her sister, Robin Stanish.
A trailblazer for women in her field, Nancy graduated with a degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Manitoba in 1970, when opportunities for young women in higher education were still emerging. She established a successful career spanning offices in Winnipeg and Vancouver before ultimately moving to Ontario, where she became the office manager of her husband Brian’s orthodontic practices. Nancy's keen attention to detail, innovative spirit, and deep empathy defined her professional legacy, where she expertly balanced the demands of work while serving as an emotional support to her colleagues and patients.
Beyond her professional life, Nancy was a passionate traveler, creating cherished memories with close friends like Julia and Art Tupper and Gina and Don Russell. An avid golfer, she enjoyed serene mornings on the golf course with Brian, whether at the Hamilton Golf & Country Club or in Carlsbad, California, where they often played together as a couple. Though Brian playfully pushed her towards competition, Nancy’s easygoing nature meant she found joy in the camaraderie rather than the rivalry of the game.
Above all, Nancy's greatest pride came from her family. An unparalleled organizer, she made sure every family celebration was a memorable event. From birthday bashes to holiday gatherings, Nancy was the mastermind behind the decorations, meals, and, of course, her loved ones' favorite desserts. Chaos and laughter filled the air during these gatherings, and while Brian played supportive roles like ensuring the drinks were flowing and helping with cleaning duties, it was Nancy's spirit that truly brought the family together.
Throughout her courageous battle with cancer, Nancy's selflessness shone brightly. Despite the physical challenges she faced, her primary concern always lay with her family, ensuring they were supported through her struggle. In this time of loss, her family finds solace in the countless wonderful memories of laughter, love, and unity they shared.
In honoring Nancy’s wishes, her family has opted for cremation, with a private service planned. A public celebration of her remarkable life will occur at a later date, allowing the community to come together to remember her spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to pay tribute to Nancy to consider donations to the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, which played a critical role in her care.
Nancy Ellen Hurd leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience that will forever be etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her. Rest in peace, Nancy; your light will continue to shine.
