Get ready, Toronto! The stage is set for a groundbreaking new play, 'FLEX', which debuts ahead of the much-anticipated Toronto Tempo in 2026. This vibrant production is not just about basketball; it’s an exploration of dreams, sisterhood, and the incredible strength of young Black women.
An Unforgettable Journey Begins
'FLEX' is produced by the renowned Crow’s Theatre in collaboration with Canada's leading Black theatre company, Obsidian Theatre, and it has successfully made its mark after premiering at the prestigious Lincoln Centre Theatre in New York during the summer of 2023. Set against the backdrop of 1997 Arkansas—the year after the inception of the Women’s National Basketball Association—the play chronicles the aspirations of a talented all-Black high school girls' basketball team.
Dreams on the Court
In 'FLEX', the young athletes aim for the championship while contending with the challenges of being ambitious Black women in a rural environment. As they approach graduation, they grapple with the exhilarating possibility of turning their passion for basketball into a professional career.
Sophia Walker, who brings the character of Coach Francine Pace to life, shares, "For these girls, discovering the option of a professional league adds a new layer to their final high school year. It’s crucial to give a voice to young Black girls and their dreams."
Empowering Voices Through Sports
Walker reflects on her own experiences growing up as a shy Black girl in predominantly white neighborhoods. Sports became her sanctuary, where she found empowerment and confidence. "Playing sports taught me to take up space and embrace my voice, which is so vital in a world filled with stereotypes about Black women being 'too loud' or 'angry'."
Community and Ambition Hand in Hand
The play dives deep into the themes of ambition and community. As the characters dream of leaving their small town, they discover the importance of support and family dynamics. "Their journey fosters a sense of community; they realize they can't achieve their dreams alone," Walker explains.
