A Heartfelt Initiative Amidst Hardship

In a touching story of compassion and community, Jasen Kerr, a determined single father, has transformed personal hardship into a beacon of hope for families in need. It all began on Christmas Eve, when Kerr found himself in a desperate situation after undergoing cancer treatment that left him financially strained. Just hours before Christmas morning, his family's only gaming console—a PlayStation 3—died, threatening to ruin the holiday spirit for his two kids.

With little more than a plea for help, Kerr turned to the Fort Sask Informed Facebook group, asking if anyone could spare a console or parts. To his amazement, by morning, generous community members had rallied to his side, providing three additional PlayStations and around 120 games. This incredible outpouring of support inspired Kerr to launch a nonprofit initiative dubbed "Jay’s Charity for Families in Need," aimed at helping other families struggling during the festive season.

Transforming Lives Through Electronics

Fast-forward eight years, and Jay's Charity is a thriving operation dedicated to collecting and refurbishing old electronics. With contributions from local businesses and volunteers, Kerr and his team have managed to repair and redistribute laptops, gaming consoles, televisions, phones, and even musical instruments to families who would otherwise go without.

Last year alone, they delivered 176 donations to local families in need and contributed an additional 20 to 25 bundles to various charities. However, this holiday season presents a significant challenge for Kerr's initiative. Despite his efforts, including funding the purchase of used electronics himself, he currently has only 37 bundles prepared for the 68 families nominated for assistance.

Addressing Growing Needs and Environmental Concerns

“This may be the first year we actually fall short in fulfilling our donations,” Kerr admitted, stressing the growing demand for support amidst an era of rapid technological advancement. “I've been committed to supporting families in need since day one, but this year is different. Our community's needs are increasing.”

The initiative not only provides vital electronics to those who cannot afford them, but it also addresses environmental concerns by diverting usable tech from landfills. For items that can’t be repaired—such as locked phones—Kerr collaborates with the local Fort Saskatchewan 4-H club to ensure they are recycled properly.

A Vision for the Future

Reflecting on his journey, Kerr shared, “I provided for my kids, and now they’ve moved on.” He is resolute in his mission to continue assisting others, particularly in supporting educational needs: “Every child today needs a laptop for school, but not every child can afford one.”
