Introduction

Arriving in Canada for the first time can be an overwhelming experience, especially for international students like Rei Shibue, a resident of St. John’s. The 2024 academic year has been transformative for him as he pursues his master’s degree in microbiology at the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources.

Initial Challenges

Upon his arrival in September 2023, Rei was filled with excitement but also a sense of isolation. "When I first arrived, I felt alone," he recalls. "I didn’t have any friends or know where to go on campus; I was just trying to find my way."

Living in Residence

Living in St. John's residence has been a game-changer for Rei. Being close to his classes has not only facilitated his studies but also enabled him to build friendships that have turned into a vital support network. "Initially, I kept to myself, ate alone in the dining hall, and focused on my studies. However, as time went on, I began to break out of my shell," he explains.

Academic Focus

Rei's ongoing studies focus on investigating microbes in the Arctic Ocean, a curious area of research that showcases his dedication to science. Beyond academics, he is actively engaged in community life at the residence, attending monthly events and taking on the role of a residence don as part of the student support team. "Getting involved has helped me meet some of my closest friends," he says. "It’s the community I needed outside of class to truly feel at home."

Desire to Help

With a desire to make a difference, Rei felt compelled to join the dons team. "I want to help incoming students navigate the challenges I faced when I got here," he shares. The role allows him to continue forging connections while also giving back to the community that has enriched his life.

Conclusion

As the residence prepares to welcome new students for Winter 2025, the experience of being a resident has profoundly impacted Rei. "It has been more rewarding and fulfilling than I could have ever imagined," he says. "I’m grateful to be part of this vibrant community that has given me so much." Rei's journey highlights the power of community and support systems for international students. For anyone considering studying abroad, finding a supportive environment can make all the difference — just like it did for Rei.
