Blue Cactus Closes After 35 Years
In a poignant moment for the Ottawa dining scene, Blue Cactus has officially closed its doors in ByWard Market after an impressive tenure of over 35 years. A sign placed at the restaurant’s entrance at 2 ByWard Market Square announces that this beloved eatery will be “closing its doors effective immediately.”
The heartfelt message from the “Blue Cactus Team” reflects on the journey shared with loyal patrons: “This decision comes as we transition from one chapter to the next, and while it is bittersweet, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we've shared with you.” The note goes on to emphasize that Blue Cactus was not just a restaurant but a cherished gathering place for friendships, celebrations, and lasting memories.
Owner's Reflections on Closure
Owner Bob Firestone shared with CTV News Ottawa that the closure comes after careful consideration, stating, “I think it's time to move on only because the market’s changed. It’s not quite the way it used to be.” He observed the changing clientele and increased competition in the area, prompting his decision to step away.
Firestone, who has deep roots in the ByWard Market—having frequented the area since he was just 15—expressed the emotional weight of the decision, explaining, “It was a very tough decision. It’s bittersweet for sure.”
Legacy of Blue Cactus
Known for its contemporary cuisine, Blue Cactus attracted food lovers from near and far, becoming a staple of the community. Reflecting on the restaurant’s legacy, Firestone noted, “I'm so grateful, tons of relationships were built at Blue Cactus. We’ve had weddings, we've had people who got engaged—so many wonderful things happened there.”
Impact on the Community
The closure of Blue Cactus adds to a growing list of establishments in the ByWard Market and Rideau Street area facing similar fates. Steve's Music recently announced its exit after 42 years, while Cafés Dekcuf and Pure Kitchen also closed their doors. The community has seen several long-standing businesses depart, raising concerns about the future of the vibrant market area.
Optimism for the Future
Despite these challenges, Firestone remains optimistic about the ByWard Market’s future. He expressed confidence in the efforts of the ByWard Market District Authority to revitalize the area and ensure it remains a safe and inviting space for visitors and locals alike. “It’s just going to take a bit of time. But we’re getting there, and it’s a great place,” he assured.
