This January, Stony Plain, AB, will be a beacon of awareness and compassion as it observes Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Residents are encouraged to participate in two complimentary public information sessions designed to enhance understanding of dementia and highlight local resources available for support.
Currently, over half a million Canadians are grappling with dementia, a number that continues to rise alarmingly. Through the dedicated efforts of the Together We Shine initiative, the town is striving to cultivate a more welcoming and inclusive environment where individuals living with dementia can thrive with dignity and respect.
“Stigma is one of the most significant challenges faced by those living with dementia,” emphasizes Deanna Butz, Community Development Officer. “By deepening our understanding of dementia and its effects, we can foster a community where everyone is safe, valued, and supported.”
Mayor William Choy reinforces this message, stating, “The Together We Shine initiative aims to nurture a caring community for all citizens. Alzheimer’s Awareness Month presents an invaluable opportunity to learn how we can better assist our neighbors, friends, and family members who are living with dementia.”
Crucial to this endeavor is the WestView Dementia Collaborative, a community-based network that unites dedicated members in their mission to create a dementia-friendly environment. This group meets regularly to collaborate, share insights, tackle challenges, and celebrate the milestones achieved in their efforts to create a more inclusive society.
