A shocking incident on Highway 401 has left a trail of injuries, damages, and significant pre-holiday traffic delays, all due to the reckless actions of an impaired driver. According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the collision occurred on Saturday, December 21, 2024, just before 8:30 a.m.

The OPP revealed that a 53-year-old driver, identified as Abdul Hakimy from Oshawa, was behind the wheel of an SUV and collided with a transport truck near the exit to Highway 15. The force of the impact caused the truck to overturn into a ditch, resulting in minor injuries for the truck driver, who had to be transported to the hospital.

Eyewitnesses played a crucial role in assisting the injured truck driver. They even went as far as removing the windshield to help free him from the wreckage. However, instead of stopping to render aid, Hakimy fled the scene in his damaged SUV. Fortunately, one witness pursued him and reported the incident to the police after he exited the highway at Joyceville Road.

Police responded swiftly and discovered Hakimy attempting to change a tire on his wrecked vehicle. Subsequent investigations revealed that he was impaired at the time of the incident. As a result, he was arrested and subjected to further breath testing.

Hakimy has been charged with several offenses, including: 1. Operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs and alcohol. 2. Operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit. 3. Failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

Adding to the chaos, the transport truck was carrying synthetic rubber, which spilled into the ditch upon flipping over, necessitating extensive cleanup efforts. This hazardous situation forced the closure of the Highway 401 eastbound on-ramp at Highway 15 for several hours. Traffic was reopened by 4:30 p.m. after a replacement truck was brought in to load the leaked cargo.

Hakimy has since been released from custody and is slated to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston in early February 2025. This unfortunate incident serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and its potential consequences, particularly during the bustling holiday season when many are traveling to celebrate with loved ones.

Stay vigilant and always prioritize safety on the roads!
