At CES 2025, Intel showcased a tantalizing glimpse into the future of computing through its exclusive "Innovation Showcase." Among the cutting-edge prototypes were next-generation laptops and impressive handheld gaming PCs that promise to redefine the gaming experience.

The Modular Device Reveal

One intriguing device caught my eye – a robust handheld that appeared to be only partially connected to its screen. When I lifted it, the screen detached effortlessly, raising suspicions about its design. Upon flipping it over, I discovered three connectors underneath, prompting further curiosity. Nearby, a laptop featured a similarly shaped protrusion, which turned out to be a perfect connection point. Intel’s gaming evangelist, Colin Helms, later confirmed it was a prototype of a modular PC concept.

Detachable AI Core

This innovative module, dubbed the “Detachable AI Core,” houses a complete Intel Lunar Lake computer, all necessary components for a functional device without needing additional peripherals. This marks a revival of Intel's previously shelved Compute Card initiative; however, industry insiders doubt this concept will transition to market-ready products.

Quanta's Role

The brainchild behind this modular design is Quanta, a lesser-known entity in the consumer electronics sphere. As an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), Quanta crafts hardware for prominent brand names without directly marketing its products. They have named the entire modular system "AI8A," and this Core is designed to integrate with other concept devices, including an all-in-one desktop graphics system that Intel chose not to exhibit at the event.

Ambitious Features of the Concept Laptop

The concept laptop is packed with ambitious features that align with Intel's futuristic vision, although many functions remain in preliminary stages. A standout feature is its motorized hinge, allowing the laptop to open and close autonomously. Additionally, the device is rumored to incorporate advanced eye-tracking technology, enabling users to organize multitasking windows simply by gazing at them. It’s said to include an innovative mouse-like ring that users can wear, further aiming to enhance multitasking efficiency.

Traditional Functionalities

However, more traditional functionalities also make an appearance, such as a built-in Qi wireless charging pad located on the palm rest, complete with indicator lights that reveal the battery's remaining life.

Testing and Expectations

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test these features in real time, and I mistakenly noted the device's name as "Aiba" before clarifying the actual "AI8A" by reviewing my photos. There was also no opportunity to perform a hot-swap of the modular component between the handheld and laptop, mainly because the module lacks an internal battery.

Conclusion

While this ambitious vision for modular computing is exciting, it’s crucial to temper expectations. The likelihood of these futuristic concepts making it to consumers, particularly in a simplified, functional form, remains doubtful. Nevertheless, the landscape of modular laptops is evolving, as exemplified by Framework’s five-year anniversary, celebrating its success in offering practical modular solutions. Additionally, Dell made its own strides in this direction at CES, unveiling its first modular, repairable USB-C port, promising a future where consumer electronics can be both innovative and sustainable.
