A Game-Changer in the Automotive World

In a stunning reveal that’s shaking up the auto industry, Slate, a newcomer backed by Jeff Bezos, has launched a completely unique electric pickup truck. This bare-bones beauty features unpainted plastic body panels, manual crank windows, and ditches luxuries like heated seats and infotainment screens. Expect this to hit the market as the ultimate affordable EV, available as both a pickup and SUV.

Pricing and Features - What You Need to Know

Set to be America’s first sub-$20,000 EV, the final price will depend on federal tax credits, but even without them, the Slate is anticipated to start in the mid-twenties—unbelievably low for an electric vehicle in 2025. To achieve such savings, Slate has reverted to basics, featuring a stark design reminiscent of older models like the Chevy Aveo.

Customizable Meets Practical

During my visit to Slate's Long Beach office, I was greeted by a strikingly minimalistic design that strongly resembles a stripped-down Ford Bronco Sport. The focus here is on simplicity and reliability, with the goal of making cars that are not only affordable but also customizable. CEO Chris Barman states, “Slate exists to put the power back in the hands of customers ignored by the auto industry.”

Transformable Design - From Truck to SUV

Much like Nissan’s Pulsar from the late '80s, the Slate can metamorphose from a two-seat pickup to a five-seat SUV. With a simple 'SUV Kit' that ships directly to your door, you can convert your truck to include a roll cage, airbags, and extra seating, all in an easy DIY package.

Accessories Galore - Personalization at Your Fingertips

Forget factory-installed options; Slate allows you to build your vehicle your way. Want heated seats? Order a heated seat cover. Prefer alloy wheels? Simply purchase them separately. There’s even a universal phone mount so you can use your own tech instead of a built-in infotainment system.

Specifications That Impress Without Breaking the Bank

Equipped with a 52.7 kWh battery, the Slate targets a range of around 150 miles. Charge it at home or utilize rapid DC charging for a quicker boost. You can also opt for a larger 84.3 kWh battery for an impressive 240 miles of range. The Slate comes with a rear-mounted electric motor boasting a solid 201 horsepower, delivering 0-60 mph in about 8 seconds.

Safety First - Features That Count

Safety isn’t compromised here; Slate aims for high safety ratings featuring Active Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, and up to 8 airbags, assuring drivers peace of mind.

Get in Early - Reservations Now Open

Reservations are currently open for just $50, with deliveries slated for the end of 2026. Will this no-frills EV redefine what it means to drive affordably? Only time will tell, but the future sure is looking exciting!
