Introduction

As Hurricane Milton aggressively intensifies into a Category 5 storm on its course toward Florida, the renowned Walt Disney World Resort, often dubbed the "happiest place on Earth," remains open—at least for now.

Current Operations

As of 6 p.m. ET on Monday, Disney World is operating normally and plans to continue its operations on Tuesday. However, the park is taking proactive measures in light of the hurricane's erratic forecast. Notably, certain accommodations will be temporarily closed starting Wednesday, including the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, the Copper Creek Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge, and the Treehouse Villas at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.

Official Statement

In an official update, the park stated, “Walt Disney World Resort is currently operating under normal conditions. We are closely monitoring the path of the projected storm as we continue to prioritize the safety of our Guests and Cast Members.” This statement highlights the park's commitment to ensuring safety amidst the developing crisis.

Cancellation Policy

For guests who may have second thoughts about their upcoming trips due to the inclement weather, Disney is offering a silver lining: cancellation fees will be waived. "If a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area within seven days of your scheduled arrival date, you may reschedule or cancel your Walt Disney Travel Company Disney Resort hotel packages and most room-only reservations (booked directly with Disney) without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney," the park's hurricane policy reads.

State of Emergency

As a precautionary measure, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency last Saturday for 35 counties, including Orange County, where Disney World is situated. Historically, should the parks close due to Hurricane Milton, this would mark only the 12th closure in the park's storied 53-year history. Out of the 11 previous closures, nine were attributed to hurricanes, with the most recent being Hurricane Ian in September 2022 and Hurricane Nicole in November of the same year. Notably, the park also shuttered after the tragic September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conclusion

While it remains business as usual for now, guests and staff alike are advised to stay vigilant and informed as Hurricane Milton approaches. Will Disney World be able to maintain its operations, or will it join the list of parks that had to close their doors due to a natural disaster? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for updates!
