Memphis Grizzlies sensation Ja Morant is making waves not just on the court but with his controversial celebrations. The 25-year-old star is determined to stick with his new grenade celebration, saying he won’t stop until someone tells him to.
Before Thursday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Morant confidently stated, "That’s my celebration now until somebody else has a problem with it, and I’ll find another one." His playful defiance indicates he's ready to face any backlash that might come.
Morant’s previous celebration—pointing finger guns—raised eyebrows across the NBA, leading to a hefty $75,000 fine due to what officials labeled an "inappropriate" gesture. Despite the warning from the league, Morant didn’t back down. Instead, he unveiled a new act during a game against the Charlotte Hornets: after hitting a three-pointer, he dramatically mimed pulling the pin from a grenade and tossing it into the stands while covering his ears for the mock explosion.
He brought back this grenade-themed celebration again on Thursday night, even as the Grizzlies faced a tough loss to the Timberwolves, 141-125. Morant finished shooting 5-for-13 from three-point land.
This season has not been without its challenges for Morant, who faced two suspensions in 2023 for appearing in social media videos brandishing a firearm, including a significant 25-game ban to start the 2023-24 season.
As the Grizzlies sit precariously at seventh in the Western Conference standings, they face crucial upcoming games against the Denver Nuggets and the Dallas Mavericks. Will Morant's grenade celebration continue to explode in popularity, or will the league put a pin in it? Only time will tell!
