Jakob Pelletier: At a Crucial Crossroad in His NHL Journey

As Calgary Flames’ 2019 first-round pick Jakob Pelletier navigates the early years of his career, he recognizes that securing a permanent spot in the NHL won’t come as a glamorous scoring forward. Instead, the 5-foot-9, 170-pound left winger understands that his pathway to success lies as a dependable bottom-six forward known for his defensive prowess and irksome presence on the ice.

“I think my game fits well on the fourth line,” Pelletier expressed recently. “It’s on me to be prepared should the opportunity arise to move up the lineup.”

The Flames face a significant decision regarding the future of the 23-year-old native of Quebec City, especially since he will require waivers to be assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL). Despite being a near point-per-game player in the AHL, consistency at the NHL level has eluded him thus far. Compounding the challenge, Pelletier has not stood out as much during training camp compared to his peers, with young prospects like Samuel Honzek, Matthew Coronato, Sam Morton, and Adam Klapka turning heads among the coaching staff. With a veteran-laden top two lines, competition remains fierce for the scant bottom-six positions.

In three preseason appearances, Pelletier has struggled to make an impact, notching zero points and posting a -3 rating while having minimal time on special teams. Flames head coach Ryan Huska remarked, “We want to see his speed consistently; that’s the biggest thing… it’s about finding a way to bring it every shift.”

Recently, Pelletier has hit the ice alongside veterans Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman, striving to deliver what he refers to as “Jakob Pelletier hockey.” He recalled his earlier preseason efforts, saying, “I was hard on the forecheck, and I was a pain in the ass to play against.”

Acknowledging the uphill battle he's faced, Pelletier remarked on his tumultuous 2023-24 season, which was marred by injury. Following a shoulder injury that sidelined him for a significant portion of the season, he struggled to regain his form upon returning to the ice. After another setback, he finished the campaign with only three points in thirteen games, spending much of the latter part of the season in the AHL.

“It was tough,” he reflected. “After surgeries and being out for so long, you come back and feel confident, but there's always that hesitance creeping in… to play my style, I need to be free of hesitation.”

To reset for the crucial upcoming season, Pelletier spent his summer with family in Quebec and devoted considerable time to golfing with his father, aiming to rejuvenate both mentally and physically.

Meanwhile, his teammates are making waves; Honzek currently leads in preseason scoring, while Coronato is among the top in goals. Klapka’s growing chemistry with veterans Kevin Rooney and Ryan Lomberg on the fourth line is also of note, further complicating Pelletier’s quest for a roster spot.

After a recent preseason game, Coach Huska lauded Honzek, saying, “Everyone was asking, ‘Where is this Honzek guy? Is he going to be a player?’ Well, he’s proven himself as a good player, and we’re thrilled about his progress.”

At this moment, Pelletier appears to be on the sidelines, facing the possibility that the Flames may favor another young player for a roster spot, attempting to sneak him through waivers with the hopes of him reclaiming his place with the team. However, the risk looms large; with his youth and affordable contract, another team could seize the opportunity to claim him.

Despite the looming uncertainties, Pelletier remains a beloved teammate, known for his infectious energy and constant smile, with veterans like Jonathan Huberdeau offering him guidance. He is acutely aware that he stands at a pivotal phase in his career, valuing the lessons learned over the last tumultuous year.

“Anything can change in a game or even a shift,” he said earnestly. “Playing in the NHL is a privilege, and you have to work hard every single day—during practices, during games. You’ve got to give your all because everything can change in an instant.”

As the Flames finalize their roster ahead of the season, all eyes will be on Pelletier, who is determined to prove that he belongs in the NHL and can excel in whatever role is entrusted to him. Will he rise to the occasion, or will he find himself on the cusp of uncertainty as the season unfolds? Stay tuned—this story is far from over!
