Famed comedian Jim Gaffigan is feeling the love from Vancouver but can’t ignore the growing tensions between Canada and the U.S.
During a recent episode of the popular podcast "We Might Be Drunk," hosted by comedians Mark Normand and Sam Morril, Gaffigan opened up about his experiences in Canada amidst the backdrop of diplomatic strains ignited by former President Donald Trump’s tariffs and controversial remarks about Canadian sovereignty.
Reflecting on his visit to Vancouver in early April for four electrifying stand-up shows, Gaffigan couldn't help but praise the enthusiastic audiences. "By the way, those audiences in Vancouver were amazing!" he exclaimed, highlighting the city's vibrant comedy scene.
Host Morril chimed in with excitement, saying he plans to visit soon as well, affirming Gaffigan's sentiments about the city.
Gaffigan elaborated on how comedy audiences vary across the globe. He recalled a time when Canadians were generally more forgiving towards American comics, but recent political climates have seemingly shifted this dynamic. "Now the Canadians are like 'We hate you,'" he said candidly, describing the palpable frustration felt by his Canadian fans.
The conversation took a lighter turn when Gaffigan narrated his experience at a whisky bar in downtown Vancouver, only to discover a surprising twist: the bar didn’t serve any American bourbon. "I like bourbon, so I'm thinking, 'I’m going to get a bourbon,'" he shares. When he learned that the establishment exclusively offered international whiskies, he quipped, "No bourbon? This is a world whisky bar, right?" Eventually, he found his way back to his hotel where he could finally enjoy his beloved bourbon.
As the comedians continued their banter, they addressed the ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, all while weaving in humor that resonated with their fellow comedians and audiences alike.
