WHY SALT AWARENESS IS CRUCIAL:

Excessive salt consumption is a ticking time bomb, significantly boosting the risk of hypertension, a major contributor to strokes and ischemic heart disease. Salt Awareness Week aims to enlighten the public about the hidden dangers of high salt intake and encourages everyone to make small adjustments in their eating and shopping habits. Did you know that governments can also play a vital role? They'll share five easy actions—dubbed 5 ways to 5 grams—which can help you lower your salt intake.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is spearheading this initiative alongside the global community. It aims to reduce sodium consumption across the Americas—a region where a staggering three-quarters of dietary sodium often comes from processed foods. Key offenders include sauces, ready-to-eat meals, and processed snacks, which we often consume without a second thought.

THE SHAKE 2.0: A GAME-CHANGER IN POLICY DESIGN

The WHO will unveil the new SHAKE 2.0: The Salt Habit, A Guide for Program Design. This pivotal resource provides a strategic framework focused on reducing sodium intake from all sources, including packaged foods, restaurant meals, and discretionary salt usage. Although the SHAKE acronym remains, it has evolved beyond specific sections to offer enhanced data for measuring impact and updated interventions based on the latest WHO guidelines.

Governments will now have clear direction on how to effectively prepare, implement, monitor, and evaluate policies aimed at cutting sodium levels—it's a significant stride towards healthier eating habits across the Americas!
