Join the 'Breasties' for the Heartfelt Run for the Cure This Sunday!

The 'Breasties' are gearing up for a significant event this Sunday, inviting everyone to unite with them at the starting line located at 13 Rockcliffe Road at 10 a.m. This community-driven initiative is part of the renowned CIBC Run for the Cure, a movement that has been cherished since its inception in 1992, when a passionate group of volunteers in Toronto’s High Park gathered 1,500 participants and raised $85,000 to combat breast cancer.

Since then, this annual event has brought together countless individuals who stand in solidarity with the thousands of Canadians grappling with breast cancer each year. Recent statistics from the Public Health Agency of Canada reveal that breast cancer remains the second most common cancer among Canadian women, trailing only behind non-melanoma skin cancer. Alarmingly, one in eight women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, with one in 34 succumbing to this disease.

Among those participating this year is Dr. Carla Trail, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. Her involvement underscores the critical importance of early detection. Dr. Trail passionately advocates for women to have any noticeable abnormalities checked and encourages women aged 50 to 74, who are at average risk, to utilize the Ontario Breast Screening program, which recommends mammograms every two years.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to come together and support all Canadians affected by breast cancer, including our own family and friends. Whether you choose to walk or run, your participation truly makes a difference,” Dr. Trail emphasizes.

The Brockville Breasties are actively seeking the community's support for their fundraising efforts and are thrilled to report they have raised $3,036 and counting as of Wednesday morning. Every contribution aids in funding vital research and improving treatment options and survival outcomes.
