Legal Setback for Lizzo

In a significant turn of events for Lizzo, a Los Angeles federal judge has dismissed a harassment lawsuit against the Grammy-winning artist. The suit was brought forth by stylist Asha Daniels, who alleged that she faced racial and sexual harassment, along with an unsafe work environment while touring with Lizzo in 2023. Daniels also claimed she had not been compensated for overtime.

Judge Fernando L. Aenlle-Rocha's ruling, which came down Monday, concluded that Daniels could not pursue litigation against Lizzo personally, instead identifying her touring and payroll companies as her official employers. All seven claims against Lizzo and her tour manager, Carlina Gugliotta, were dismissed. The judge also pointed out that many of Daniels’ complaints could not be addressed under U.S. employment law, as they occurred during a tour in Europe.

Daniels has accused Lizzo of fostering a “sexually charged workplace culture” and has alleged instances of racist and fatphobic remarks made by the singer’s wardrobe manager. Lizzo, for her part, has rejected these claims, with her representatives calling the allegations an “absurd publicity stunt.” Lizzo's legal team characterized Daniels as a "disgruntled" former employee with baseless accusations.

The lawsuit is not the first of its kind for the singer famed for her empowering anthems like "Truth Hurts" and "Juice." Last August, three of Lizzo's former dancers filed a separate suit against her, claiming sexual harassment and fat-shaming incidents that occurred between 2021 and 2023. They seek a jury trial, which has added additional strain to Lizzo's public persona.
