Major Sinkhole Sparks Emergency Declaration in North Vancouver: What You Need to Know!
The District of North Vancouver has declared a local state of emergency due to a significant sinkhole that has emerged on a secluded private road, jeopardizing access to 30 to 40 properties along the picturesque Indian Arm.
Residents first alerted district officials about the alarming development on December 18, particularly where Ostler Creek crosses Sunshine Falls Lane. According to Peter Cohen, the District's General Manager of Engineering and Infrastructure, the sinkhole, measuring nearly a meter wide, continues to expand, raising concerns among locals.
An assessment conducted by district staff alongside a geotechnical consultant revealed that the culvert beneath the road sustained damage, likely attributed to the atmospheric river that struck on October 19. Although the road and culvert are not under the municipality’s ownership, the urgency of the situation prompted local authorities to declare an emergency. This allows municipal control over the necessary repairs to be enacted promptly.
“Without immediate intervention, it’s unlikely that section of Sunshine Falls Lane would be passable for the remainder of the winter,” Cohen emphasized. This has underscored the importance of maintaining access for emergency services and residents in areas beyond Ostler Creek on Sunshine Falls Lane, especially with predictions of more severe storms on the horizon.
The contracted repair team is tasked with sealing the holes in the compromised culvert and addressing any voids left in the surrounding soil structure. While estimates for the repair costs are still being evaluated, the district is actively collaborating with provincial authorities to explore available emergency funding to assist in covering these expenses.
As of Monday, Cohen expressed optimism that emergency repairs could restore the culvert's functionality within a few days, bringing relief to the affected residents in the area.
This declaration serves as a critical reminder of the unpredictable nature of our environment and the ongoing challenges that local governments face in safeguarding community infrastructure. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of these vital repairs!
