Mandatory Masking Reinstated in Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance Hospitals

In a proactive measure to combat the rise of respiratory illnesses, the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) has mandated masking in all clinical areas of its hospitals, effective immediately. Hospital officials announced this new policy on Wednesday, as they prepare for the anticipated increase in influenza, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and COVID-19 cases during the fall and winter months.

“Masking continues to be a key tool for infection prevention and control,” said Erica Jensen, the health alliance’s manager of quality, patient safety, and infection control. This decision comes in the wake of a concerning uptick in respiratory illnesses, as early indicators suggest an escalation in cases across Ontario.

During the week of September 15-21, Public Health Ontario reported a COVID-19 positivity rate of approximately 17.7%, alongside 103 outbreaks and 764 hospitalizations due to the virus. The HPHA’s new masking requirement aims to safeguard patients, healthcare workers, and visitors during this critical time.

While masks are compulsory in all clinical spaces—including inpatient units, emergency departments, outpatient clinics, and medical imaging—HPHA strongly recommends their use in non-clinical areas such as hallways, cafeterias, and meeting rooms. Masking stations providing medical-grade masks have been established throughout the hospitals to ensure easy access for everyone.

“Areas where masking is mandatory will be clearly marked,” Jensen added. “If you are unsure whether to wear a mask, it’s better to err on the side of caution. We also encourage anyone feeling unwell to postpone their visit to loved ones in the hospital.”

This return to mandatory masking reflects not only the current health climate but also the need for vigilant preparedness as cold and flu seasons approach. As public health authorities monitor disease activity, HPHA may consider implementing universal masking protocols if necessary to manage outbreaks effectively.
